Vineyard operations in December

December. Winter descends upon our rows, stripping them bare and guiding them into a new vegetative slumber. While work in the vineyard pauses, we don’t stay idle. A new adventure begins for Agricola Marrone, thanks to 5 new hectares of land leased!

A cold December morning. We walk among the bare vines, calm and silent witnesses to another year and another harvest just passed. Winter brings suspension, rest, and vegetative dormancy: the leaves fall, and we return to the cellar, devoted to carefully and passionately transforming the fruits of the hard work we’ve accomplished.

December 2024 for Agricola Marrone is both an end and a new beginning. On one hand, we look back with pride at all the progress made and the great successes and recognitions of the past year. On the other, we embrace a new challenge with optimism and enthusiasm.

After years of friendship and shared passion, we have taken over approximately 5 hectares of land, of which 3 in the Mga Bussia and 2 in the Mga Pugnane. These are excellently exposed vineyards that, we are confident, will allow us to bottle Barolos with a strong personality, truly representative of the region.

The Marl of Sant’Agata Fossili typical of Bussia, also present (with slight variations depending on exposure) in Pugnane, suggests wines characterized by depth, austerity, and earthy notes, which will smooth out and refine during aging. This will be a new, great, and stimulating challenge: we will dedicate ourselves fully, as we always love to do, to capturing the identity of these precious Mga in every bottle.

These new hectares demand constant attention and timely interventions, in line with our philosophy of the happy vineyard, ensuring fewer diseases, lush growth, and greater fruit production and quality. Taking advantage of the approaching cold and the dormancy phase typical of winter months, we fertilized all the new rows with cow manure and began replacing some of the dead plants (those wonderful century-old vines that have told so many stories and produced so much) with new young rootstocks. Now, we wait for the temperature to drop and the first snow to fall. We remain patient, preparing for a new year full of innovation, challenges, projects, and ambitions.

A small preview? In January, our Barolo DOCG “Castellero” will be released, with Mga “Pugnane” soon completing our range. Raise your glasses, then, to all that has been and to all the wonderful things yet to come!
